The warm weather has arrived (along with some wet weather) and this being my first year trying to grow food on my balcony I have succeeded and failed. Every year I try to grow herbs on my balcony. When I say “grow” I really mean “keep alive”. I don’t grow them from seeds. I buy them already grown and just put them into a different pot with other herbs. It makes me feel happy when I see them lush and green and I pretend I did all the work myself.
This year I decided I would try and get some tomato plants. I was told it’s really easy to grow tomatoes. I bought a few different varieties at the St. Norbert Farmers’ Market and most of them looked limp and dead within a week. I was told to chop off the dead leaves (which I did) and one plant has given me a few little grape tomatoes. The others…well, they’re slightly delayed.

I will blame my near-dead plants on anything other than my sheer lack of gardening skills. For example, we’ve had some crazy weather lately. Including reports of tornadoes, hail etc. This is a photo I took of the intense storm cloud moving in last week….and of the rainbow that followed.
