Happy Canada day !

Winnipeg really comes alive on Canada day with parties all over the city. The Forks will be hopping ,the village street party is a must and that’s just a couple of ways to celebrate in town. How much do you actually know about Canada ? Only 17 % of Canadians knew what the second most toured sight in Canada is after Niagara falls, Ok I’ll tell you…it’s Harbourfront Centre in Toronto. Here’s one for you , how many CFL teams are there ? 59 % of Canadians knew that one, there are eight teams. Those questions are from Macleans toughest Canada day quiz ever and it is a tough one ! What are your plans this Canada day ? I’ll most likely head to the village for the street party and maybe fire up the BBQ and just enjoy the day. I won’t be blowing off fireworks this year as the grass still hasn’t grown back from last years display, actually my arm hair hasn’t grown back from last years display either. Whatever you do enjoy the day and remember this is one great country and we’re all lucky to live here.

Happy Graduation !

Ah, they grow up so fast don’t they ? My son Christopher graduates today from high school and while I’m glad to see him move on to the next stage of life there is a part of me that wishes he was still “my little guy”. I’m happy to have my Father here from New England for the big day even though he missed his connection in Chicago and didn’t get in until late last night leaving me with only three hours sleep before todays show…zzzzzzz ! It’s going to be a great weekend with the graduation and then tomorrow the Ljungberg clan is heading out to the “fishbowl” to take in a Goldeyes game with a few BBQ’s thrown in there as well. I hope you have a super weekend as well and a big congrats to all of those graduates out there and just a side note to my son, you’ll always be my little guy and we’re all so proud of you !

Locked Out

So, I had a little adventure last night – one that I certainly did not ask for.

I was out on my balcony with a friend yesterday, soaking up some evening sunshine.  My sister was inside the apartment, but came out to say goodbye to us before she left for the evening.  Once she was gone, my friend and I continued visiting and close to an hour passed before we decided to call it a night.

As I pulled on the handle to slide open my patio door, I realized it was STUCK.  Yup.  Wouldn’t budge.  My SISTER had subconsciously flicked the lock and then walked out of the apartment on her merry way!  I know, I know!  You’re thinking, ‘pick up your cell phone silly girl!  Everyone has one of THOSE these days!”.  And you’re right.  I do have a cell phone.  So does my friend.  They were sitting side by side on my coffee table on the OTHER side of the locked patio door.  SIGH.

After sitting back down to plan out a course of action – we could yell at passersby, but that wouldnt’ help much since there isn’t much they could do – AND I live many stories up!  We picked up a BBQ fork and tried to PRY the door open like burglars.  But discovered we should not give up our day jobs to become burglars.  Didn’t budge.

Finally, after I announced I had to use the washroom – my friend, in a fit of BRUTE STRENGTH pulled that patio door RIGHT THE HECK OPEN!  He busted the lock of course… but we were inside!  SUCCESS!

Anyway… that was my adventure for the week.  What’s yours?

Summer has hit !

At last the mercury is where it should be and I’m loving it ! If you drive past my house on a hot day you’ll most likely see me sitting in my little kiddie pool on the front lawn ( which some say brings down the property value). After a few days of this great weather and we forget about the long cold winter we just went through but one thing you can’t forget is to apply sunblock ! Last week was sun awareness week and we all need to be reminded of the harmful effects of the sun so make sure you slop on that sunblock. Both of my kids have already been to the beach and a few patios, where is your favourite summer hang out ? make sure you get out and enjoy warm temps because it won’t be long before we’re knee deep in the white stuff !

HELP!!

Ok – So I’ve realized that Father’s Day is fast approaching and I have about one week to think of something fabulous to do for my dad!

This may not sound like such a big deal, but the problem is that my sister and I have a lot of trouble thinking about Father’s Day presents.

My dad doesn’t really have any serious hobbies,  so buying him gifts can get tiring, because really, how many ties or polo shirts does one really NEED???

What I need is a FANTASTIC Father’s Day idea!  Here is some information to help you help ME…

My dad is a quiet, laidback man who would do anything for his family.  He did in fact.  He moved to Canada  from a different country when he was in his 20s because he thought he could give his future family a better life in this country, than in one filled with poverty.  He has worked hard his entire life and his been able to give my mom, sister, and me an amazing life.

What do you buy a man like that?  My sister and I tend to spend a lot of time with our mom because we have a lot in common with her, so our dad really deserves an extra special day…

Any suggestions????  Seriously, anything will help!!  Stuff to buy, places to go!  Anything!!!

Easy rider !

I’m a little sore today after completing a 15 kbike ride yesterday but it was well worth it. It was the 11th annual Riverview Health center’s “Cycle on Life” which is a 15k ride to raise funds that helps Riverview provide care to a number of people in a state of the art facility. I completed the ride in an hour and 15 minutes (which included a stop at BDI ) and after the ride we all enjoyed a champagne brunch ! This year the “Riverview riders ” raised a whopping $ 106,000.00 , WAY TO GO ! Next year the ride will be the first Sunday in June and we would love to you there, it’s a great day and alot of fun . CITYtv was also a proud sponsor a big thanks to everyone involved.

Off the Wagon

In the age of modern technology – social networking sites like MySpace, Facebook, and of course now, Twitter (which I really don’t quite understand yet…) are all the rage.

I made an attempt to “take a break” from the one I belong to in an effort to get back to a more personal way of corresponding with friends.

Well, I started over the weekend, and am disappointed to say I broke down today.  In the course of my “break” from Facebook, I missed two invites to get together with friends (sent of course, over Facebook), I was unable to send a regular old email to a friend since I usually only correspond with her on Facebook, and I missed TWO friends’ birthdays because I didn’t get the notification on Facebook.  If I’m honest, I also literally started to feel like I was suffering from withdrawl for not knowing EXACTLY what was happening in the lives of my friends and acquaintances!

I find this to be more than a little disconcerting.  I tend to think of myself as an open and friendly PEOPLE person.  So why do I send texts instead of phonecalls, or E-cards instead of handwritten birthday cards?  I guess because it’s easier.

We’re all busy, and text messages or Facebook posts have become the most efficient way to get your message out.

However, my challenge to you this week:  When you’re about to press “send” on that Facebook wallpost or text message to ask a friend ‘what’s new’ – Make a phonecall and set up a coffee date instead.

Yellow cucumbers ?

posted on June 4th, 2009 - Filed in Uncategorized - No comments »

That’s right I planted yellow cucumbers that grow perfectly round ! I didn’t even know there were yellow cucumbers until BT’s gardening guru, Arline Wheeler, brought them on the show yesterday. A few years ago I planted what I thought were good old cucumbers but when they grew they were round like a melon so we called them “cucalopes”. I love growing my own veggies, this year I planted green and yellow beans, spinach, lettuce, tomatoes, snap peas, carrots, beets, strawberries and onions…that’s going to be one big salad ! If you plant veggies why don’t you “grow a row” for Winnipeg Harvest ? It’s simple, just designate one row of veggies as the row for Harvest and take the produce down to Winnipeg Harvest because everyone needs fresh veggies in their diet !
